GENERAL INFORMATION

Dear Participant;

Mount Ararat is the most magnificent elevation of Anatolia and the most sacred mountain of the world with its 5137 meters height. Ararat, which is the most famous mountain of Anatolia and even of the whole Middle East, has historical legends that are not attributed to other mountains. The mountain, stated in the Old Testament as “r-r-t”, was later called as Ararat. Actually, “r-r-t” is the Hebraic name of powerful Urartu Kingdom centralized in Eastern Anatolia which contains Transcaucasia and Northwest Iran Region in 9-7 BC.

It is believed that Noah's Ark grounded on this mountain after the Great Flood. What's interesting is that, even today, the people of the region believe that the Ark is located on the top of the mountain as hidden under the glaciers, because they do not want anyone to see and harm it for they accept it as sacred. In this respect, a great number of poems, quatrains, stories, proverbs and legends were written in Turkish Folk Literature on this subject.

Throughout history, Mount Ararat was a source of inspiration on founding and rising of civilizations established in Eastern Anatolia, the Caucasus, Nakhchivan and Northwestern Iran. Ararat Mountain, which is the biggest source of power and wealth of Anatolia and the Turkic World, constitutes the common point of intangible cultural heritage.
